Vyommitra is a female-looking humanoid robot developed by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) to operate on the Gaganyaan, a crewed orbital spacecraft
The name Vyommitra comes from the Sanskrit words "Vyoma" (meaning "Space") and "Mitra" (meaning "Friend")
Vyommitra was first unveiled on January 22, 2020 at the Human Spaceflight and Exploration symposium in Bengaluru.
She is a half-humanoid robot with a robotic torso and head, two arms, and two legs
Her legs are not functional, but she is designed to float in microgravity and interact with astronauts and the Gaganyaan spacecraft
Vyommitra will be sent in a space capsule around the end of 2020 or early 2021 to study
how astronauts respond to living outside earth in controlled zero-gravity conditions.
She will simulate the human functions required for space before real astronauts take off before August 2022
The first crewed mission was originally planned to be launched on ISRO's LVM3 rocket in December 2021
but as of October 2023, it is expected to be launched by 2025.
